Best AI usage trackers for Codex users (2026)
A local Codex session’s token count cannot tell you how much allowance your ChatGPT account has left. Start with the account usage reading, then add token history if you need it.
Disclosure: We make AI Usage Tracker. We recommend competitors when their documented features better fit the job.

Use the same account and the same window
OpenAI’s account guidance describes checking usage in an active CLI session with /status and through the Codex usage dashboard. Those views are the reference for your account’s allowance.
A tracker should distinguish account windows from model-specific windows and local token totals. If the provider does not return a window, a tracker should not fill the gap with an invented percentage. An old local log is not proof of a fresh account reading.
CodexBar
- Best for
- Free quota tracking with documented Codex sources
- Price
- Free, open source
- Runs on
- macOS 14+; Linux desktop and CLI builds
Its Codex documentation explains account paths and optional dashboard extras. Review those paths when you have more than one login or workspace.
Use the free app first if a menu-bar allowance display is the whole requirement. Optional extras should be chosen for a field you actually need.
Trade-off: Optional web dashboard enrichment has different setup and resource implications from a simple local or OAuth reading.
AI Usage TrackerOur app
- Best for
- Account allowance and session states on a Mac edge
- Price
- $9.99 once
- Runs on
- macOS 15+, Apple silicon and Intel
Our Codex ring follows the account windows returned by the connected source. Hover for session, weekly and extra windows when available. Supported activity signals help you notice a working or waiting session.
The Codex setup page documents separate homes under ~/.codex-<name>. They are discovered at launch and keep separate rings and settings.
Trade-off: Only documented file-based account profiles supply these readings. API-key-only or keychain-only logins do not provide this integration’s ChatGPT account limits.
Tally
- Best for
- Managing several Codex and Claude accounts
- Price
- Free, open source
- Runs on
- macOS
The Tally repository describes fleet quotas and session tools. It belongs on the shortlist when you want help choosing or managing accounts, beyond viewing them.
Review the session and profile behavior before adopting it for work. An account manager has a larger role in the workflow than a passive meter.
Trade-off: Its broader session-management scope may be unnecessary when you only need a percentage display.
ccusage
- Best for
- Reviewing the token workload saved locally
- Price
- Free, open source
- Runs on
- Command line; requires a supported JavaScript runtime
The ccusage guide includes Codex among its local sources. That makes it useful for a report after a large task or for comparing recorded activity across days.
Keep monetary estimates separate from what your ChatGPT plan or API billing record says you owe.
Trade-off: It cannot reconstruct account activity that was never recorded on this computer, and token totals are not remaining quota.
Our recommendation
Use the account usage view to plan whether to start work. Use the live monitor you prefer to keep that reading nearby. Add account management only if choosing accounts is part of your workflow, and add reports when you need to inspect past sessions.
A practical way to choose
- Open a fresh account usage reading in Codex.
- Check the tracker is displaying the intended profile and window.
- Review one large task’s local report without treating estimated dollars as a bill.
Questions
Does more locally recorded cost mean a larger subscription charge?
Not necessarily. List-price equivalents and subscription billing are different accounting models.
Will an API-key login show ChatGPT plan limits in our app?
No. This integration needs the supported ChatGPT account profile; API billing is separate.
