Best AI usage trackers for Claude Code users (2026)
Claude Code can have account allowance left while a long conversation is running out of context. A tracker for one problem does not automatically solve the other.
Disclosure: We make AI Usage Tracker. We recommend competitors when their documented features better fit the job.

Claude usage and length are separate
Anthropic’s explanation distinguishes usage allowance from conversation length. Work across Claude surfaces can share an account allowance, while a conversation has its own length constraints. A token total from one CLI session does not measure all account usage.
Choose the monitor around the interruption you encounter. If you frequently hit an allowance window, monitor the account. If the trouble is a long conversation’s context, look for a context warning. If an agent waits unnoticed, look for session attention states.
Usagebar
- Best for
- Claude Code context and allowance in one focused view
- Price
- $9 once
- Runs on
- Mac; signed-in Claude Code required
Its product page includes remaining context and warnings alongside account windows. That is a concrete advantage for a Claude-only workflow where context is the problem.
Keep the two readings separate when deciding what to do next. Starting a new conversation and waiting for an account window address different limits.
Trade-off: Requires installed, signed-in Claude Code. Its public offering is focused on Claude, not a general multi-provider tracker.
CodexBar
- Best for
- A free allowance monitor with documented connection paths
- Price
- Free, open source
- Runs on
- macOS 14+; Linux desktop and CLI builds
The Claude documentation explains its data sources and freshness checks. It is a useful option when the required signal is the account’s remaining allowance.
Do a fresh comparison before trusting the meter for planning a long task. A cached bar can remain visible when the latest request has failed.
Trade-off: Account quota and estimated costs are not the same as conversation context. Do not assume the display replaces a context-specific tool.
AI Usage TrackerOur app
- Best for
- Knowing when a Claude session needs attention
- Price
- $9.99 once
- Runs on
- macOS 15+, Apple silicon and Intel
Our app shows account limits beside supported Claude Code session states. The waiting signal matters when a task has paused for input but the account still has room. Separate used Claude profiles can appear as separate rings.
See the Claude setup page for the cache, CLI and OAuth connection paths. A new profile requires a restart to be discovered.
Trade-off: It is paid and is not marketed as a general Claude context-warning replacement.
ccusage
- Best for
- Investigating locally recorded token activity
- Price
- Free, open source
- Runs on
- Command line; requires a supported JavaScript runtime
Its daily reports help you review what the CLI recorded. Look at a report after a substantial task to understand the shape of local usage.
Use the report to ask better questions about the workflow. Do not convert a token-price estimate into a claim that the subscription charged that amount.
Trade-off: The report only sees available local data. Other Claude surfaces and account-wide limits need their own reference views.
Our recommendation
Usagebar earns its place for context warnings. CodexBar is the first free allowance view to try. Our app fits people who need session attention and multiple tools together. Reports complement the live view when you want to investigate past work.
A practical way to choose
- Check whether the limit you hit is account usage or conversation length.
- Compare the tracker with Claude’s own Usage view for the same account.
- Add local reports only when you need to investigate recorded work.
Questions
Are Claude API charges part of the same meter?
Do not combine API billing with a subscription allowance. The authentication and billing route determines what usage is counted.
Can the app redeem or increase my Claude allowance?
AI Usage Tracker monitors readings. A reset or plan action must be performed through the provider’s supported controls.
