Best AI usage trackers for students (2026)
If you check one AI account a few times a week, another paid utility may solve a problem you do not have. Start with the provider’s own usage view and keep the money for the tools you actually need.
Disclosure: We make AI Usage Tracker. We recommend competitors when their documented features better fit the job.

Check compatibility before downloading
An older laptop can rule out a tracker before its features matter. Our commercial app requires macOS 15+. Check the current requirements of every candidate, along with the operating system you can actually run.
A usage tracker does not include access to the AI service. The provider subscription, available allowance and any extra charges remain separate. Do not interpret a free monitor as free model usage.
Provider’s own usage pages
- Best for
- Occasional checks without another app
- Runs on
- Provider website or installed CLI
Use Claude’s account usage guidance or the relevant provider view. For Codex, OpenAI documents the CLI status check and usage dashboard.
This is enough when you only need to see whether the account has room before a study or coding session.
Trade-off: You have to open the view yourself. It does not provide a shared desktop display across tools.
CodexBar
- Best for
- A free Mac quota display
- Price
- Free, open source
- Runs on
- macOS 14+; Linux desktop and CLI builds
The CodexBar repository documents its requirements and setup. Try it if manual checks are interrupting work often enough to justify a background monitor.
Keep only the providers you actually use visible. A crowded dashboard is not an advantage when you are trying to focus.
Trade-off: Check provider setup and account identity. macOS 14+ is the published Mac requirement; do not assume every old Mac qualifies.
AIUsageBar
- Best for
- A free starting point for Claude
- Runs on
- macOS
Its Claude page offers free Claude monitoring. That is worth evaluating when Claude is the only service you need to track.
There is no need to buy Pro for a provider list you do not use.
Trade-off: Other providers require the paid tier. The monitor does not increase the allowance of your Claude plan.
AI Usage TrackerOur app
- Best for
- Frequent Mac coding sessions with several agents
- Price
- $9.99 once
- Runs on
- macOS 15+, Apple silicon and Intel
Our app can be useful when you repeatedly miss a waiting session or switch between providers. Separate rings and supported agent-state signals keep those decisions near the editor.
Local Ollama or LM Studio monitoring is another specific reason to consider the $9.99 purchase if your coursework uses those runtimes.
Trade-off: For basic allowance checks, we recommend the free options first. Buy only for a workflow you will use.
Our recommendation
Start without buying a tracker. If checking usage becomes a repeated interruption, evaluate a free monitor. Pay for a display or runtime feature only after you know it solves a recurring problem on your own laptop.
A practical way to choose
- Bookmark your provider’s usage view.
- Check your laptop’s operating system against the tracker requirement.
- Use the free option during a normal week before deciding whether a paid workflow helps.
Questions
Does a free tracker include an AI subscription?
No. The tracker and the AI service are separate products.
Is a paid tracker necessary for accurate usage?
No. Authoritative account data comes from the provider. Price does not make the same source more authoritative.
