Best AI usage trackers for freelancers (2026)
A token report showing a large dollar estimate is not enough to put that amount on a client invoice. Freelancers need separate records for provider charges, project activity and the allowance available for the next task.
Disclosure: We make AI Usage Tracker. We recommend competitors when their documented features better fit the job.

Separate three different numbers
Actual charges come from the provider’s billing record. Estimated token cost values a recorded workload at a model price. Remaining quota tells you whether a subscription window has room. A freelance project can need all three without any of them being interchangeable.
Before recharging a client, agree what is billable and which record supports it. A useful activity report is evidence of recorded work, not by itself an agreement to pass on list-price-equivalent model costs.
ccusage
- Best for
- Repeatable reports from supported local coding logs
- Price
- Free, open source
- Runs on
- Command line; requires a supported JavaScript runtime
Its daily report documentation offers a practical starting point for regular review. Use consistent date ranges and retain the source context for a report you may need to explain later.
It is suitable for investigating recorded activity and estimated costs. Reconcile any actual charges separately with the provider.
Trade-off: Missing local logs, other devices and unrecorded work create gaps. Estimated cost is not a verified invoice total.
Syrtis (formerly TokenBar)
- Best for
- Visual history by model and time
- Price
- Free, open source
- Runs on
- macOS 14+ on Apple silicon; Windows x64 and ARM64
Syrtis’s dashboard description emphasizes local model and time-based analysis. It is useful for spotting an unusual day or a model that dominates the recorded workload.
That can guide a review of repeated work or model choice. It does not establish which subscription gives the best value without considering task outcomes.
Trade-off: Local data has a limited scope. Its Mac build requires Apple silicon, and it does not offer cloud history sync.
AI Usage TrackerOur app
- Best for
- Knowing when work can continue and which agent needs input
- Price
- $9.99 once
- Runs on
- macOS 15+, Apple silicon and Intel
Our app helps with the operational part of a freelance coding day: supported account windows, reset times and working or waiting session states. Keep work and personal Claude or Codex profiles in separate rings.
It fits a developer who wants to notice a paused task and available capacity without turning usage into another dashboard to maintain.
Trade-off: It is not a client billing system, time tracker or unified project cost ledger.
SessionWatcher
- Best for
- A commercial workflow across Mac and Windows
- Runs on
- macOS 14+; Windows 10 (2004+) and 11
The product facts explicitly describe its costs as estimates. That distinction is useful when evaluating the reporting alongside its live limits.
Consider it if you work on both systems and want a supported paid product. Match the plan to your devices and account count.
Trade-off: Pro for Teams is seat licensing, not an administrator’s client or company spend dashboard.
Our recommendation
Keep charges, activity and allowance in separate records. Choose a reporting tool if you review past work, and a live monitor if interruptions are costing you attention. No tracker on this page should be treated as a complete freelance invoicing system.
A practical way to choose
- Export the provider records for actual billable charges.
- Review local activity using a consistent project and date scope.
- Use a live monitor to plan work around the account windows that actually apply.
Questions
Can I invoice the dollar total from a token report?
Only if that billing basis is agreed and the record fits the work. Estimated model costs are not automatically actual provider charges or authorized client expenses.
Does using more tokens prove I was more productive?
No. Usage measures recorded model work. Repeated attempts and harder tasks can both increase it; assess the outcome separately.
